Janesville Craig High’s girls soccer team got into the win column Thrusday night with a key Big Eight Conference victory over Sun Prairie.

Mari Hosseini scored seven minutes into the game and Sofia Sanchez made four saves to lift the Cougars to a 1-0 win over the host Cardinals.

Craig had played well in losing three games to state-ranked teams to start the season.

“All the girls played well, and everybody seemed to contribute to the win at some point,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said. “Our defense was outstanding all game, and Sofia had her best game of the year. “We needed this win, and the girls went out and got the job done.”

Craig scored the only goal off a free kick. Westphal controlled the free kick and found an open Hosseini, who lifted the game-winner that sailed just under the crossbar.

The Cougars will host the Craig Invitational this weekend, starting with a game against Elkhorn at 5 p.m. today.

Vikings roll past Cougars—Nicole Strieker and Kelsey Bysted each had a hat trick to lead Janesville Parker’s girls soccer team to a 14-0 nonconference win over Clinton.

The Vikings (5-0) scored seven goals in each half.

“Nobody likes to see games get out of hand like that, but you play who is on the schedule,” Parker coach Matt Beisser said. “The good thing about tonight is that everybody got a chance to play, and I sat out my starters for most of the second half.

“Kelsey and Nicole got their goals, but we really worked the ball around the field well as a team. As long as we continue to do that, we can play with anybody.”

Bysted scored the first three goals of the game and Strieker got three of Parker’s last four goals of the first half. Clinton did not get a shot on goal, while Parker had 26.

Parker will play at Brown Deer tonight.
