Missed opportunity hurts Craig softball team
A missed opportunity early in the game and the pitching of Sun Prairie’s Jillian Hodgson proved too much for the Janesville Craig High softball team Monday afternoon.
Hodgson limited the Cougars to four hits in a 2-1 Cardinal victory. Craig fell to 3-2 in the conference and 5-3 overall. Sun Prairie is 2-2 in the league.
“It was a very well played game,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “I think we’re mirror images of each other. We didn’t get a hit when we needed it. We had our chance.”
The Cougars got three of their hits in succession in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Jillyn Mortensen doubled to lead off the inning. Brianne Gohlke followed with a bloop single and Gabrielle Cassady singled home Mortensen to put runners on first and second.
But Hodgson escaped any more damage by getting the next two hitters on fielder’s choices and ended the inning with a strikeout.
“Hodgson got tough when she needed to,” Bayreuther said.
Hodgson then was perfect until Whitney Oliver singled with two out in the seventh. Oliver stole second, but the game ended with a groundout.
Sara Weber’s homer in the second inning put Sun Prairie up, 1-0.
The Cougars will be at Madison East this afternoon.
