— Construction is beginning on a $3.8 million expansion project at the North American headquarters of Kuhn North America in Brodhead that will add at least 50 jobs in the next year, said Greg Petras, director of operations.

The company broke ground Tuesday on its two major projects: a new lobby/visitor center addition and office renovation, and a 66,000-square-foot manufacturing plant expansion.

The projects are scheduled for completion in August and September, respectively.

Kuhn North America is the continent’s largest manufacturer of TMR mixers and manure spreaders. It is a part of The Kuhn Group, a major global farm implement manufacturer.

“Obviously it means opportunity for the communities in which our employees live,” Petras said. “It means more partnerships between vendors, and many of our vendors are from local communities.”

The new lobby/visitor center will create an official entrance to the building for customers, dealers, vendors, employees and guests. The project also will renovate current office space that houses the company’s accounting, finance and information technology staff.

This is the company’s third expansion in five years.

“I think the fact that we’re doing a third one is testament that the last two worked,” Petras said.

Construction in 2004 and 2006 added 141,000 square feet, but that space already is fully utilized.

“We more than doubled our machine demand in the last five years,” Petras said. “In addition, we expect future growth with new machine introductions as well as additional market share.”

This year’s addition will address future space requirements for new product manufacturing, parts warehousing and prototype and product test facilities.

The company employs more than 500 people in North America at its two manufacturing facilities in Brodhead and Greeley, Colo., and sales/distribution centers across the United States and Canada.

The Kuhn Group was founded in 1828 and is the world’s leading single-brand producer of agricultural implements, with key market positions in hay and forage, plowing, soil preparation, seeding and planting, spraying, manure and fertilizer spreading and livestock feeding equipment.
