Craig takes advantage of Parker's mistakes

That’s what carried Janesville Craig High’s baseball team to Big Eight victory Monday afternoon at Riverside Park.
The Cougars took advantage of five Janesville Parker errors to secure a 6-3 Big Eight Conference win over their crosstown rival.
Although shaky at times, Craig starter Trevor Foss picked up the victory. The senior righthander overpowered the Vikings with nine strikeouts, but also walked nine batters and hit one other.
Craig coach Vic Herbst said it was a typical Parker-Craig baseball game.
“These games are always close, tight battles, and today was a great example,” Herbst said. “Fortunately for us, after Parker tied the game at 3-3, we came right back and took the lead.
“There were a couple of plays that we needed to make that we didn’t, but that’s because we need to be more aggressive. But we got the win, and that’s the most important thing.”
Parker starter Garrett Morris sailed through the first two innings before the Cougars touched him for three runs in the bottom of the third. Sevy Stavn knocked in the first run with an RBI single, and Foss made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Craig’s third run of the inning scored on an error, one of four unearned runs for Craig.
“We couldn’t get the big hits to get guys in, and we didn’t make the plays in the field when we had to,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “We had a good pitcher on the ropes in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and we couldn’t take advantage.
“Garrett was Garrett out there today. He kept us in the game, but his defense let him down.”
Parker tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. Morris started the rally with a double to center, and Parker took advantage of Foss’ inability to find the strike zone. Foss walked three batters in the fourth and hit another. Ross Mauermann drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2, and Ian Larson’s infield single scored Alex Koel with the tying run.
Craig responded in its half of the fourth with three runs. Two Parker errors allowed the first two runners to reach—both of whom scored—and Zach Bayreuther got the only RBI of the inning with a single to center.
Brett Fredricks relieved Foss with two outs in the sixth and retired four of the five batters he faced. Fredricks came on with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but he got Morris to fly out to left to end the threat.
Herbst said Foss’ velocity was still good in the sixth, but his pitch count was high.
“I thought Trevor had a couple of innings where he was in the zone and really tough, and a couple others where he lost focus,” Herbst said. “I think as the season moves, his focus will get better and he’ll be OK.
“Brett came in and threw strikes. That’s what you have to do, especially when you come in with men on base.”
Craig will host Madison West on Wednesday, while Parker is at Beloit Memorial.
