Craig, Parker split softball doubleheaders
The Cougars cruised past Milton, 13-5, in the second game after losing, 14-11, to Fort Atkinson in the first game.
Despite playing playing a fifth game in four days, Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said the Cougars (3-2) had a productive day.
“It would’ve been nice to win both, but Milton and Fort are both quality teams,” Bayreuther said. “That’s why we schedule them every year.
“We swung the bats well both games, but we still struggled a bit defensively. At least, we finally got a decent day to play.”
Jillynn Mortensen led the hit parade for Craig. The junior was 5-for-10 in the two games, and drove in three runs in the win over Milton.
“Jillynn continues to smack the ball around,” Bayreuther said. “And that’s what you want from your leadoff hitter.”
Senior Anna Fagerli had four RBIs for Craig in the loss to Fort Atkinson.
The Blackhawks trailed 11-10 in the sixth, but scored three runs in the top of the sixth and added another run in the seventh en route to the win. Chelsea Northey had two hits and four RBIs for Fort.
Felicia Zajicek and Gabrielle Cassady each drove in two runs for Craig against Milton. Freshman Bailie Whittaker went the distance to pick up the win against the Red Hawks.
“Just like she did in beating Waunakee yesterday, Bailie got ahead of hitters and threw strikes,” Bayreuther said.
Craig plays city rival Janesville Parker at 4:30 p.m. Monday at at Dawson Field.

Parker splits—Kelley Koebler fired a complete-game two-hitter to lead Janesville Parker to a 9-0 win over Fort Atkinson in the second game of nonconference action Saturday at Dawson Field.
Parker lost 2-1 to Milton in the first game, thanks to a two-run single by Shauna Wilson in the top of the sixth inning.
Koebler was overpowering against the Blackhawks. The senior righthander struck out 10 and walked only one batter.
“Kelley did a fantastic job of mixing up her pitches,” Parker coach Dyann Riley said. “And Amanda (Benash) really hit the ball well.”
Benash had a triple and a double against Fort Atkinson as Parker forged an 8-0 lead after three innings.
“The difference in the two games was hitting,” Riley said. “We put the bat on the ball in both games, but we hit the ball right at somebody against Milton.”
