Cougars return experienced line-up
The Cougars have veteran players at No. 1 through 4 singles, and that’s a good sign for coach Gary Hallowell.
“I’m really excited about this season,” Hallowell said.
Craig looks to improve on last season’s 3-5 mark in Big Eight duals and a sixth-place finish in the conference meet.
Hallowell said the league again will be chasing Middleton, which swept through the Big Eight with an 8-0 dual mark last season and won the conference meet.
Chris Matteson, a senior, returns at No. 1 singles to lead Craig.
“Chris is a strong ground stroker,” Hallowell said of the three-time letter winner. “He has worked on his game all winter.’’
Kenny Durfee, a senior, returns at No. 2 singles after completing a successful hockey season with the Janesville Bluebirds. Durfee also is a three-time letter winner.
“Kenny has played a lot for me,” Hallowell said. “He is a strong competitor.’’
Jace Fenton, a senior, will hold down the No. 3 singles post, and Steve Mickelson, a junior, returns to No. 4 singles.
Seniors David Jackowski, Brian Stevens, Ben Timblin and Doug Johnson, along with juniors Ben Tanko and Stewart Winter, will makeup Craig’s doubles teams.
Hallowell said there are a lot of possibilities in doubles.
“We’ve got to find a fit. That’s the tough thing,” Hallowell said.
“The guys have got to play a lot of matches to see who is going to go where.’’
Overall, Hallowell is optimistic about the savvy Cougars.
“We should be able to show improvement this season,” Hallowell said.
