Janesville Craig’s baseball team ran into hot-hitting Madison Memorial here Thursday in a rain-soaked Big Eight Conference game.

The Spartans scored in every inning en route to a 10-2 victory as they banged out 12 hits against three Craig High pitchers in a game shortened to five innings by rain.

“Give Memorial credit. They came out right away and swung the bats well,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “And until we stop giving away free passes with bases on balls and start making the plays defensively, we’re going to continue to struggle in this conference.

“The conditions were miserable for a baseball game, but they were the same for both teams. You have to find a way to get it done and make the proper adjustments.”

Memorial led 8-0 after three innings before Craig scored one run in the fourth. The Cougars finished with only four hits against two Memorial pitchers.

Craig Czprynski got the win, allowing one earned run in four innings.

“He did a nice job of staying around the plate and only walked one batter,” Herbst said of Czprynski. “His off-speed pitch was pretty good, and he kept us off balance.”

Craig senior Ben Yaucher started and took the loss.

The Cougars host Waunakee in a nonconference game at 5 p.m. today at Riverside Park.
