Craig bombs Waunakee
After suffering a 13-0 whipping at the hands of Madison Memorial on Thursday, the Cougars bounced back to smash the Warriors, 12-2, in a game switched from Waunakee.
“It’s a funny thing,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “We got whomped by Memorial, and everything was the reverse of what happened to us Thursday.
“Everything we hit fell in, and their hits were right to us,” Bayreuther said. “That’s kinda how the game went.’’
Craig pounded out 17 hits en route to its second victory in three games.
The Cougars jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Jillynn Mortensen smacked a leadoff triple. Gabrielle Cassady stroked an RBI single, Anna Fagerli added a two-run single, and Abby Sullivan hit an RBI double to finish off Craig’s first inning.
Fagerli had five RBIs, including a two-run double in the sixth inning. Fagerli and Lyke had four hits each, including a pair of doubles for Lyke.
Craig’s freshman starting pitcher Bailie Whittaker held the Warriors to four hits. Whittaker notched four strikeouts and issued no walks.
“Bailie got ahead of the hitters today,” Bayreuther said. “When you get ahead of the hitters, you can go after them a little bit.’’
Craig hosts Fort Atkinson at 10 a.m. today in another nonconference game.
