It was wet and cold, but the Janesville Craig High track and field coaches were glad to get some competition outdoors Thursday.

Both the Cougars’ boys and girls squads swept past Elkhorn and Union Grove in a nonconference meet.

“I was pleased we were able to get this meet in,” said Craig girls coach Mark Marsden. “It was kind of ironic. We tried to get this meet in twice before, and we ended up going into the worst weather of the three. We should have went the other two times.”

“It was typical of this spring,” said Jeff Deininger, the Craig boys coach. “We learned a lot tonight. We did some good things, and there are areas we need to improve on.”

The Craig boys defeated Elkhorn, 78.66-67.33, and Union Grove, 115-30. Elkhorn beat Union Grove, 102-44.

The Craig girls defeated Elkhorn, 82-55, and Union Grove, 122-14. Elkhorn defeated Union Grove, 101-32.

Craig’s Marie Fischer won both the long jump (11-44.5) and triple jump (30-0.5).

Caroline Shea won the 200 (28.19). Craig freshman Taylor Storbakken won the 400 (1:10.4). Cassidi Running, who is in her first year out for track and field, won the 3,200 (12:40.20).

Craig swept the hurdle events with Amanda Klobucar taking the 100 highs (19.8) and Nicollette Scieszinski winning the 300 intermediates (51.2).

Lauren McQueen was a member of both the Craig’s winning 400 and 800 relay teams.

The boys were led by two double-winners, Ryan Ahrens in the 1,600 (4:41.3) and 3,200 (10:27.5), and JoJo Pregont in the long jump (19-10.5) and triple jump (38-11).

Other Cougar winners were Ryan Kinkade in the 200 (23.4), Matt McDonald in the 800 (2:13.8) and Greg Pedersen in the shot (45-5.75).

“We’re going to be counting on all those guys this year,” Deininger said. “It’s going to be important to keep those guys healthy.”

Both the boys and girls teams start Big Eight competition Tuesday with a double dual meet against Middleton and La Follette at La Follette.
