— Janesville Craig’s softball team upended defending Big Eight champion Middleton, 8-6, to get its season off to a roaring start here Wednesday.

The Cardinals went 16-0 in the conference last spring.

Craig bounced back from 4-0 and 6-5 deficits to make its victory even sweeter.

“For us to comeback from a 4-0 deficit showed something,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “I’m pretty proud of them.’’

After trailing 4-0, Craig scored five runs on four hits in the fifth inning and added three runs on two hits and two errors in the sixth to seal the victory.

After getting hit on the arm by a pitch in her first at-bat, Craig junior Jillynn Mortensen got even by smacking a one-out, bases-loaded triple in the Cougars’ five-run fifth. That helped erase Middleton’s 4-0 lead, and Abby Geiger ripped an RBI single to put Craig ahead 5-4.

Mortensen added an RBI double in the sixth inning to put Craig ahead for good, 7-6. She scored from second on a botched pickoff attempt for the final result.

“She got hit by a pitch and could barely move her arm,” Bayreuther said.

Bailie Whittaker, Craig’s freshman relief pitcher, allowed two runs in the fifth, but she put the Cards down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to notch the victory.

Craig hosts Madison La Follette today at Dawson Field.
