— The city council will have at least one new face.

In the 2nd District, Penny Roehrer defeated Alderman Larry Magee.

In the 1st District, Todd W. Krause, who was appointed alderman in November, narrowly defeated G. Stewart Mathison.

“It was an awesome race between Stew and I,” he said. “The 1st District was in good shape whether I won or not.”

Krause said he’s got his work cut out because the city faces several pressing issues. Chief among them is the proposed Mirbeau-Hummel development, he said.

In the 3rd District, Alderman Tom Spellman defeated former longtime Alderman Bob Flemming.

“I’m very thankful to the voters of the 3rd District for having faith in me,” he said. “A number of them have stopped and said they like the questions I ask, the diligence I provide them.”

Spellman said the city council’s first test will be to address the newly elected mayor’s ability to serve. The questions stem from events that transpired as the campaign came to a close over the weekend.
