UW-Whitewater volleyball, soccer teams advance
The top-seeded Warhawks (28-4) swept the eighth-seeded Blue Devils, 30-25, 30-23, 30-16.
Kate Lazotta had 43 assists for Whitewater, while teammate Kelly Sorenson, a Madison Memorial graduate, had 15 kills and 13 digs. Rebekah Nelson, a Williams Bay graduate, and Abby Schultz each added 11 kills.
Whitewater, the regular-season conference champion, will host the final four. The Warhawks play No. 4 seed UW-La Crosse in a semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Third-seeded UW-Eau Claire plays seventh-seeded UW-Platteville, a 3-1 upset winner over second-seeded UW-Oshkosh, at 5 p.m. at Williams Center.
The championship match is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Soccer team posts shutout
UW-Whitewater blanked UW-Stout, 3-0, in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament Tuesday at Fiskum Field.
Whitewater’s Stephanie DesJardins scored on a header 21 minutes into the first half. Sarah Brown gave the Warhawks a 2-0 lead, scoring five minutes before the half.
Mary Donohoo, the fourth-leading scorer in the WIAC, added Whitewater’s final goal at the 62-minute mark. It was Donohoo’s 11th goal of the season.
Whitewater (12-7-1) plays UW-Stevens Point at 2 p.m. Friday in a semifinal at UW-Eau Claire. Eau Claire, the WIAC regular-season champion, faces UW-La Crosse at 11 a.m. The semifinal winners advance to the title match at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Pick named scholar athlete
UW-Whitewater’s Ashley Pick has been named the 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete.
Pick, a senior from Monroe, is majoring in accounting and has a 4.00 grade-point average. She was named to the 2006 United States Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III All-Academic Team.
A three-time WIAC scholastic honor roll member, Pick has been recognized on Whitewater’s Dean’s List and earned the school’s student-athlete achievement award.
Pick finished 38th overall in the WIAC meet last weekend and was her school’s Marty Van Steenderen Sportswoman of the Year in the fall of 2006.
Pick is the fourth Whitewater women’s cross country student-athlete to win the league award, joining Lisa Barman (1994), Melissa Lutz (2003) and Megan Kielar (2005).
Jennifer Rogers, a Whitewater senior from Fort Atkinson, also was nominated for this year’s award.
UW-La Crosse’s senior Dan Thour received the Max Sparger men’s cross country scholar-athlete award.
