— The pool of potential Rock County judges has been winnowed to four.

Nine lawyers applied to fill the post that Judge John Roethe will leave at year’s end. Gov. Jim Doyle will appoint a successor to fill the remainder of Roethe’s six-year term, which ends July 31, 2009.

The selection process narrowed the field to six, then four as of this afternoon:

-- Michael Fitzpatrick, Janesville, attorney with Brennan, Steil & Basting.

-- Kenneth Forbeck, Beloit, attorney with Forbeck, Elliot & Monahan.

-- Barbara McCrory, Janesville, Rock County family court commissioner.

-- Margery Tibbetts, Janesville, attorney with Brennan, Steil & Basting.

Doyle will interview each candidate, probably by the end of the week, spokeswoman Carla Vigue said Tuesday afternoon.

She could not say when the governor will make his decision.
