The 2008-09 state budget includes fee increases to the cost of the first certified copy of a vital record, including birth, death and marriage certificates.

The budget also increases the fee for expedited service in issuing certified copies of vital records, according to the Register of Deeds offices in Rock and Walworth counties.

Marriage and death certificates that once were $7, and birth certificates that were $12, will be $20 for the first certified copy. Expedited service in receiving copies increases from $10 to $20.

Additional copies of the same record in the same name remain at $3.

The extra revenue will be used to update outdated paper registration, archiving and copy issuance systems at all register of deeds offices and with the state. It also will go toward updating data entry of birth and death records.

Certified copies are used to secure employment, passports and driversí licenses, as well as enroll in school, receive health insurance and qualify for government programs.

Photocopying or accepting unauthorized photocopies of vital records is illegal in Wisconsin.

For more information, contact the Rock County Register of Deeds Office at (608) 757-5656 or the Walworth County Register of Deeds Office at (262) 741-4214 or 741-4233.
