Badgers skate past Robert Morris, 8-2

— Blake Geoffrion’s career-best five-point game helped No. 13 Wisconsin to a 8-2 victory Saturday and a sweep of a two-game non-conference series.

Geoffrion scored the Badgers’ first goal and added four assists.

Michael Davies scored twice and freshman Patrick Johnson added his first career goal and two assists for Wisconsin, which outshot the Colonials 49-27.

Freshman Kyle Turris had a power-play goal and three assists for the Badgers, who scored four times on eight power-play chances, making them 8-for-17 in the two-game series.

J.C. Velasquez and Ryan Cruthers scored for Robert Morris (2-2), which was 0-for-4 on the power play Saturday and 1-for-17 in the series.

Freshman Scott Gudmandson made 25 saves in his collegiate debut for Wisconsin (3-1). Geoffrion scored his second goal in as many nights and added two assists as the Badgers opened up a 3-0 lead in the opening 12:59.

Geoffrion scored 3:50 into the game, and Turris and Johnson added to the lead.

Velasquez put home the rebound of his own blocked shot late in the opening period to get the Colonials within two goals. It was the sophomore center’s first collegiate goal.

Cruthers then cut the deficit to one on a breakaway 41 seconds into the second period and Robert Morris had a power play a short time later but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Wisconsin scored twice late in the period to make it 5-2.

Podge Turnbull scored his first collegiate goal and Davies added a power-play goal 1:45 later. Kyle Klubertanz, Davies and Brendan Smith scored in the third period for Wisconsin.

Wes Russell made 41 saves in his first career start for Robert Morris.

The Badgers won the series opener 7-2 on Friday.
