— Blame it on a Janesville Gazette reporter missing the fine print.

Thursday’s report in the Gazette that the full-size sport utility vehicles built in Janesville finished last in their segment in a recent Consumer Reports survey on vehicle reliability was flat out wrong.

Actually, the one-half ton models of Chevrolet Suburbans and Tahoes and GMC Yukon XLs and Yukons—all 1500 models built in Janesville—finished about in the middle of the pack in large SUV segment of the Consumer Reports’ 2007 Annual Car Reliability Study. A CR spokeswoman said Friday that they were all below average in terms of reliability, but they weren’t last in their category.

The big trucks that finished last in the category and were named “least reliable” were the 2500 models or three-quarter ton versions. Those vehicles are made in Arlington, Texas.

All six were at varying degrees below average, the spokeswoman said.

For just the GM products in the large SUV category, they were ranked in this order: Chevy Suburban 1500 and GMC Yukon XL 1500, Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon, Chevy Suburban 2500 and GMC Yukon XL 2500.
