— As a stunt motorcyclist, Milton resident Ryan Suchanek drew on his determination and mental toughness to perform dangerous tricks for audiences around the world.

Now, he will draw on that strength again to recover from a devastating crash, friends and family members say.

Ryan, 26, suffered a severe concussion, internal injuries and several broken bones Oct. 6 when the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a car on Bowers Lake Road, just blocks from his home, his mother, Inge Suchanek, said. He also severed his left foot.

Ryan was flown by helicopter to University Hospital in Madison. Thursday, he was transferred to Mercy Hospital in Janesville for rehabilitation, according to his family.

“We almost lost him,” Inge said. “That’s never a call you want to get.”

His friends instantly rallied around him, Inge said. Since the accident, his stunt team, Vertical Mischief, has set up a Web site for Ryan, www.helpryans.com. He has received more than 50 messages of support on his MySpace Web page.

Friends have organized a motorcycle ride Saturday to help Ryan pay his medical bills. Ryan has insurance through his job with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, but that runs out at the end of the year, Inge said. Meanwhile, he still has a long road of rehabilitation in front of him, she said.

“He’s looking at some bills,” she said.

The ride will start at noon Saturday at Hubb’s Powersports Center at 4675 N. Highway 26, Janesville, said Ryan’s friend and teammate, Neal Sheppard. Riders will stop at Team Triumph, a motorcycle dealer at 4747 E. Highway 14 in Janesville.

Next, the riders will watch teammates of Ryan perform at the grand opening of Gene’os Bar (formerly the Red Barn), 7530 County M, Evansville, at 2 p.m.

Finally, they’ll travel to a home in Milton for a cookout, Sheppard said.

Event organizers will collect donations for Ryan along the way and sell T-shirts and bracelets to support the cause.

Ryan has collected fans across the country and around the world through his performances, Inge said.

Friends in California, Florida, China and Singapore are collecting money for the motorcyclist.

“He’s done a lot for the sport with his travels to China and that stuff,” Sheppard said. “A lot of riders really admire him.”
