— The Janesville Bluebirds wasted no time getting down to business in their Big Eight and season opener for high school boys hockey.

Kenny Durfee got assists from Tommy Tralmer and Bentle Geldard and fired a shot over the shoulder of Beloit Memorial goalie Adam Eno just 33 seconds into game here Tuesday night. Janesville’s co-op team carried the momentum of that early goal to a 6-2 triumph over the Purple Knights at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.

“We came out with a lot of speed,” Janesville substitute head coach Darrel Moore said. “We were trying to be the fastest team on ice and get to the puck first.

“Kenny Durfee got us sparked. He took control to handle the puck and set the pace of the game.’’

Durfee also had an assist on Janesville’s second goal. Ross Mauermann took the pass and blasted it into the right corner of the net at the 4:19 mark of the first period for a shorthanded goal that made it 2-0.

Janesville made it 4-0 lead with two more first-period goals. During a pile-up in front of the net, Aaron Jacobson snagged the loose puck on an assist from Mauermann and scored at the 7:07 mark. Derek Mussey then got an unassisted goal on a power play at 13:55.

Beloit (0-2, 0-1) closed the first period with a goal by Kyle Popodics at 16:38, but Janesville was right back at it in the second period. Mauermann got his second goal on assists from Joe Allen and Kaleb Eichman at 6:03, and Zach Bayreuther completed the Bluebirds’ scoring with a power-play goal on assists from Mauermann and Mussey at 12:37 for a 6-1 lead.

Moore said he wasn’t surprised by the Bluebirds’ ability to pile up the goals.

“Not with the two lines we have,’’ he said. “We can score one goal with one line, and the next line can pop one in, too.’’

Janesville, which received honorable mention in Wisconsin Prep Hockey’s preseason state ratings, will attempt to pop another win into the books when it plays Madison West at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Madison Ice Arena.
