The Rock County Council on Aging will close two dining centers for seniors in 2008.

The centers closing are at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 590 S. St. Joseph St., Edgerton, and New Zion Baptist Church, 1905 S. Mound Ave., Beloit.

Rock County will continue to deliver meals to homes in Edgerton, and Beloit’s two other locations will stay open. The county contracts with Meals on Wheels to deliver home lunches in Beloit, and that won’t change.

Seniors who were eating at the two centers are welcome at any of the others, said Council on Aging Director Joyce Lubben.

A lack of participation was the big factor in the decision to close the centers, Lubben said.

An average of three seniors a day were having lunch at the Edgerton center, and about six people a day were eating at the Beloit center, Lubben said.

A well-attended center would serve 12 to 25 seniors daily, she said.

“We have tried over the years a number of times to increase participation,” she said. “It was just not cost effective anymore.”

The county served 29,000 meals at its nine locations in 2007. In 2008, the nutrition program will have a budget of $390,000. The home delivery program will have a budget of $164,000.

The program offers nutritious meals in a social atmosphere for anyone older than 60 for an optional donation of $3 per meal.

“It’s just a really good benefit for seniors,” Lubben said. “They can get in one-third of their recommended daily allowances and meet other people.”
