— After two years of buzz, community members finally can get a preview this week of a planned “healthy village” in Edgerton.

Edgerton Hospital and Health Services will unveil its plans for a new, 25-bed hospital at public events Tuesday and Wednesday. The unveilings will offer conceptual plans of the new hospital, to sit on 70 acres along Highway 59, and drawings of what the building will look like, said Nancy Hoffman, director of the hospital’s foundation and marketing.

“It’ll be more detailed than plans we’ve shown before,” she said.

The company announced its intention to build a new facility in 2005, the same year it changed its name from Memorial Community Hospital to Edgerton Hospital and Health Services.

Hospital CEO Jim Pernau has discussed his desire for the facility to be a “healthy village” combining traditional medicine, preventative care and alternative methods.

The village will hold at least three buildings: a hospital, a skilled nursing home and a medical office building, Hoffman said. The unveilings will focus on the hospital, although officials hope to have all three buildings completed by late 2009, she said.

The company hasn’t yet determined the construction schedule, but it plans to break ground in spring, she said.

The unveiling is an important step for the hospital’s fund-raising efforts, said Jim Schultz, chairman of the Edgerton Hospital and Health Services Foundation.

So far, the foundation has raised $1.4 million for the new facility and hopes to raise at least $2 million of the expected $26 million price tag from the community, Hoffman said.

“The unveiling of the plans, I think, will be a key point, as several people who are committed would like to see those,” Schultz said.

It also will be a chance for community members to see what’s in store for local health care. A new facility will attract more physicians and resources to the area, Hoffman said.

The new facility will be closer to Milton than the current hospital, helping serve residents of both communities, Hoffman said. The hospital is holding one unveiling in each city.

“It’s a very exciting time for health care in the Edgerton and Milton area,” she said.
