Four bag first-team all-state

Whether it was offense or defense, Lucas Davis often was more than Evansville High football opponents could handle this season.

Davis, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior, was a first-team All-Rock Valley Conference tight end and defensive end, and he has duplicated those honors as a two-way first-team pick in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association all-state selections.

During a 7-2 regular season, which brought Evansville within one touchdown of a sixth straight Rock Valley championship, Davis caught 18 passes for 333 yards. More importantly, he was a key blocker for an offense that produced 4,028 yards and a force for a defense that limited opponents to an average of 139 yards rushing per game.

Janesville Parker senior tackle Harold Lloyd, a two-way first-team player in The Associated Press selections that were announced earlier this week, is on the coaches’ first-team offensive unit and the second-team defense.

The coaches’ first team also includes Travis Frederick, a 302-pound junior offensive tackle from Walworth Big Foot, and Tice Braden, a 6-1, 173-pound junior defensive back from Lake Geneva Badger. Frederick also has received defensive honorable mention from the coaches and was a second-team selection by the AP on offense.

Frederick, a two-time Lineman of the Year in the Rock Valley, helped lead Big Foot to a 10-1 season and its first championship since 1975. Braden was a key player in Badger’s Lakeshore co-championship, the school’s first title since 1990.

Area recognition in the coaches’ all-state voting also includes honorable mention for Brian Zamzow, Milton senior offensive lineman; Jake Keeser, Fort Atkinson senior defensive end/outside linebacker; Andrew Keister, Evansville junior defensive back; Derek Cashore, Evansville junior inside linebacker; Sam Reed, Evansville senior defensive lineman; Derrick Rundle, Brodhead-Juda inside linebacker; Andy Jinkins, Big Foot senior defensive back; Steve Chaplewsky, Madison La Follette senior quarterback; and Jake Dammen, Sun Prairie senior kicker.

Keeser was the Defensive Player of the Year in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Kewaunee senior quarterback Alex Delebreau and Mequon Homestead junior lineman Shelby Harris are the coaches’ Players of the Year on offense and defense, respectively. Their teams were WIAA state runners-up in Divisions 5 and 1, respectively.
