— After being open just less than a year, CK Grill & Bar has pulled off to the shoulder to make way for the Road Dawg Saloon & Eatery on Janesville’s northeast side.

Earlier this week, Jim and Barb Stoa closed the restaurant at 3502 Milton Ave., and sold it to an employee of their Beloit Country Kitchen operation. The new owner plans to open the Road Dawg after acquiring a liquor license in early December, Jim Stoa said.

Last November, Stoa closed his Country Kitchen in Janesville to remodel the property and reopen it as CK Grill & Bar, a newly franchised concept of the Madison-based Country Kitchen International. The Stoas owned and operated the Janesville Country Kitchen since 1980.

CK Grill & Bar was similar in concept to casual dining spots such as T.G.I. Fridays, Chili’s and Applebee’s.

“It went over OK,” Stoa said of the new concept. “But I turned 60 this year and just decided that maybe it’s time to pull back a little bit.”

Stoa said he is confident in the new owners. The opening of the new Menards complex across the street only will boost traffic in the area, he said.

Since July, CK has been under the daily direction of long-time Janesville restaurateurs John and Barb Roherty. They no longer are associated with the restaurant.
