— UW-Whitewater’s women’s volleyball team is headed to Bloomington, Ill., and date with the University of Puget Sound from Tacoma, Wash.

The eighth-ranked Warhawks (34-4) and 20th-ranked Loggers (20-8) meet at 1 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Second-rated defending champion Juniata, Pa. (36-4) plays Amherst, Mass. (30-4). The winner faces Whitewater or Puget Sound in Friday’s semifinals.

Quarterfinal matches in the other bracket of the Elite Eight pair top-ranked Wittenberg, Ohio (37-0) against Stevens Institute (36-4) of New Jersey, and seventh-ranked Washington University (30-6) of St. Louis against fifth-rated Emory, Ga. (31-4).

Semifinal winners play for the championship on Saturday at the Shirk Center.

Whitewater won the national championship in 2002 and 2005. The Warhawks lost to eventual runner-up Washington University in last year’s semifinals.

The Warhawks earned this year’s trip to the Elite Eight by outlasting the University of St. Thomas, 30-32, 30-21, 30-28, 24-30, 15-13, in a regional title match Saturday night at St. Paul, Minn. Whitewater scored the final two points to break a 13-13 tie and claim the victory.
