— The main entrance and circle drive in front of Parker High School will stay open another day. The much-used drive and entrance were scheduled to be closed Monday or today, but now it looks as though they wonít be closed until Thursday, Principal Dale Carlson said.

The delay is because a new sidewalk to the east of the northeast entrance isnít finished, and the drive canít be closed until that is done, Carlson said.

Carlson also said previously announced plans for the use of the west-side entrances might be changed. Plans had been to use the door to the music hallway at the schoolís northwest corner for a handicapped-accessible entrance during construction. But now, contractor J.P. Cullen & Sons is looking into the possibility of modifying the main west-side entrance for handicapped use.

Officials had been told previously that the west-side ramp is too steep to meet government standards, but the contractor will see if the ramp can be modified to make it acceptable, Carlson said.

If the ramp can be modified, then the main west-side doors could be used by the handicapped from now until March 2008, Carlson said.

The music hallway entrance still is expected to become the temporary main entrance starting next March, when work on the west-side addition is expected to begin, Carlson said.

Carlson said the groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, is tentatively planned to be held outdoors, to the north (Mineral Point Avenue side) of the auditorium.

The public is invited to the program, expected to last 20 to 25 minutes.

A similar ceremony at Craig High School is planned for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
