UW-W volleyball team heads to St. Thomas
Whitewater, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champion, has been assigned to an eight-team regional at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn. The top-seeded Warhawks (31-4) play Concordia-Moorhead (17-8) in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Thursday.
If the Warhawks advance, they’ll face another Minnesota school—Bethel University (21-10) or St. Benedict (21-10)—at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The championship is at 7 p.m. Saturday and could pair Whitewater against WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire (2-10), host St. Thomas (26-4), Carleton (19-5), Minn. or Central (26-8), Iowa.
Whitewater, No. 7 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, is the highest rated team in the regional. St. Thomas is 13th, followed by Central, 18th; Concordia, 20th; and Carleton, 22nd. Eau Claire, Bethel and St. Benedict have received votes.
The Warhawks had expected to be assigned to the Carthage Regional in Kenosha. Instead, that venue includes UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse from the WIAC.
This is the only second time history and first since 1997 that five WIAC schools have received NCAA volleyball tournament bids. Whitewater earned the WIAC’s automatic berth by winning the conference tournament, while the others gained four of the 19 at-large berths in the 61-team field.
Regionals champions advance to the Nov. 15-17 elite eight at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., where the national title will be decided.
Whitewater won the national championship in 2002 and 2205. The Warhawks reached the semifinals last year.
