Area produces extra WIAA state swim qualifiers
Hailey Schneider, a Janesville Craig High School sophomore, has earned her way back to the girls WIAA state swim meet.
Schneider made Sunday’s list of extra qualifiers for Division 1 in two events as a result of her performances Saturday in the Middleton Sectional. She qualified with a second-place time of 1:08.67 in the 100-yard breaststroke and a third-place finish of 2:12.08 in the 200 individual medley.
Schneider won the Big Eight Conference breaststroke championship this season and placed eighth in the state last year. She also was 10th in 500 freestyle in last year’s state meet.
Individual and relay champions in all sectionals earn state berths. Extra qualifiers in Division 1 are the next 18 best performances in each event from all sectionals. The next 12 best in Division 2 become extra qualifiers.
Along with Schneider, this area will be strongly represented by Lake Geneva Badger/Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay of the Southern Lakes Conference in Division 1 state competition Saturday at the UW Natatorium in Madison. Badger/Big Foot/Williams Bay produced four event champions and five extra qualifiers while placing third with 292 team points in the Kenosha Tremper Sectional.
Southern Lakes schools also will be have solid representation in Division 2 state competition Friday at the UW Natatorium. The conference list includes sectional champions in five events and 10 extra qualifiers.
Milton, the Southern Lakes champion for the fifth straight year, has qualifiers in seven events, led by sectional champion Jennah Haney in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Haney also is on the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams, which are extra qualifiers.
