Skyler O’Laughlin, a 6-10 sophomore center, may have gotten his first big thrill as an Elkhorn High varsity boys basketball player.


O’Laughlin scored six of his 13 points in the first quarter Tuesday night to help jump-start the host Elks (4-2), and they went on to a convincing 70-49 nonconference triumph over previously unbeaten Lake Geneva Badger (5-1).


Max Findreng played a major role in the victory, too After the Elks grabbed an early 12-4 advantage and led 19-15 after the first quarter, the 6-1 junior scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in a 22-10 second period that set the tone for good.


Badger, which was coming off a major 53-37 win over Racine St. Catherine’s, fell behind by 15 in the second quarter, trailed 41-25 at halftime and by 23 in the second half.


Eric Bryson, another junior, added 11 points to Elkhorn’s balanced attack. Jimmy Merritt and Kevin Wipters led Badger with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Whitewater 71, Turner 45—Whitewater (2-3) hit Turner (2-3) with a 25-5 blast in the first quarter and breezed to a nonconference win at Beloit.


Tony Bilderback scored scored seven of his 13 points for the Whippets in the decisive first period. Miles Hookstead and Kyle Lencho added six apiece to that surge.


Lencho finished with 12 points, and Hookstead wound up with 10. Kyle Treptow topped Turner with nine.

Lakeside 79, Jefferson 74—Lakeside Lutheran won a nonconference thriller at Jefferson to go 4-0 for the season.


With less than 30 seconds remaining, Nate Bauer sank one of two free throws to give Lakeside a three-point lead. Jefferson committed a turnover on the ensuing possession, and Lakeside’s Justin Eternick made two free throws with four seconds left for the winning margin.


In a game that featured numerous lead changes, each team had four players reach double figures.


Lakeside’s Cole Strohbusch scored 22 points, Jared Matthies added 18, Eternick got 14, and Bauer finished with 13.


Jefferson’s Mike Splittgerber scored 16 points. Teammates Trevor Probst, Josh Alvarado and Nate Fosberg scored 15 apiece. Bobby Barbano had 10 assists.
