Beloit High’s boys basketball team brought the curtain down on four-time defending Big Eight champion Madison Memorial’s long conference winning streak Tuesday night.

The visiting Purple Knights clipped the top-ranked Spartans, 57-55, to end Memorial’s league-record streak at 40 games.

It was Memorial’s first conference loss since a 74-61 setback at home against Middleton on Feb. 3, 2005. The Spartans finished the 2004-05 season with four league wins, then went 16-0 each of the last two seasons and won their first four this season.

Memorial, which received the No. 1 state rating Monday in The Associated Press Division 1 poll, fell into a first-place tie with Madison La Follette at 4-1 in the current Big Eight race.

Beloit (2-5, 2-4), which was winless until beating Janesville Parker last Saturday, led 28-22 at the half and 44-40 after three quarters against Memorial. The Spartans tied it with less than two minutes remaining but couldn’t take the lead.

Beloit’s Max Mauel sank two free throws with 15 seconds left for the winning margin. Memorial missed a three-point goal at the buzzer.

The Spartans’ Derek Nikejmi scored 22 points, while Vander Blue added 13 and Tre Cremer got 11.

Beloit did not have a scorer in double figures, but the Knights sank four three-point goals to the Spartans’ two and converted 13 free throws to Memorial’s 11.

Jeronne Maymon, Memorial’s leading scorer and the second-leading scorer in the Big Eight, did not play.
