Bluebirds net major victory
The Janesville Bluebirds won a big early nonconference hockey game on the road Thursday night.
The Bluebirds scored single goals in the first and third periods, and David Jacobson made 22 saves to give Janesville a 2-1 victory over Hartland Arrowhead.
It was the fourth win without a loss for the sixth-ranked Bluebirds. Arrowhead (3-2) was ranked ninth in the state.
Janesville opened the scoring in the first period. At the end of a penalty near the Bluebird net, Ross Mauermann shot a pass to the far blue line to Zach Bayreuther.
Bayreuther took the accurate pass and moved in on goal, putting his shot between the goaltender’s legs.
Arrowhead tied the game in the second period, winning the battle for the puck in the corner. Zach Rigsby took a pass in front of the net and his one-timer got past Jacobson.
The Bluebirds scored the deciding goal on a power play five minutes into the final period.
Jacobson set up the goal with a long clearing pass to Bayreuther, who chipped it over to Kenny Durfee. Derek Mussey moved in with Durfee on Arrowhead goalie Taylor Andrews, and Durfee found Mussey in the slot. Mussey’s shot went under the stick of Andrews.
The Bluebirds made things exciting with a penalty with 2:50 left. A minute into the power play, there was a scramble in front of the net. Jacobson covered the puck with 1:43 left, and Janesville killed off the rest of the time without Arrowhead getting a serious scoring threat.
The Bluebirds play Madison West in a makeup game at the Madison Ice Arena at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
