— A fire Sunday night destroyed a furniture refinishing shop behind Gaslight Antiques and Auction services, 626 Millar Road, Beloit.

A neighbor reported the fire at 10:51 p.m., said Town of Beloit Fire Department Capt. Wayne Endthoff.

If the neighbor hadn’t seen the fire in the steel furniture shop, the auction barn would have been lost, too, Endthoff said. Flames were just touching the auction barn owned by Robert Bue when fire fighters arrived.

“The smoke went straight up,” Endthoff said. “Normally you see it blowing across the road, but it was still, and the smoke went way up. If the neighbor hadn’t left the house, we think it would have gone undetected for a long time.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Endthoff said, but it is not believed to be suspicious. Damage was significant—probably more than $40,000, he said.

City of Beloit, South Beloit and town of Turtle fire departments assisted.
