— Shortly after noon Friday, the Salvation Army kettle stand at the north entrance of Woodman's grocery store in Janesville was silent and empty.

The Salvation Army of Janesville's 2007 Christmas fund-raising campaign has raised $96,691 since Nov. 16 - 34 percent of its $285,000 goal.

The money raised at this time of year makes up about 25 percent of the Army's annual operating budget, including the food pantry, noon feeding and transitional housing programs.

Any business interested in participating in the Army's counter top kettle or new paper kettle programs should call Capt. Kirk Schuetz at (608) 757-8300.

The need for bell ringers continues with about half of the available time slots open.
