— Janesville Craig basketball coach Bob Suter called his team’s shot selection a three-ring circus.

The Cougars weren’t clowning around against Beloit Memorial Friday night.

Lucas Burns racked up a game-high 28 points, while Jo Jo Pregont and Kyle Goike chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Craig (2-2, 1-2) to its first Big Eight victory of the season, 69-55, over the host Purple Knights.

“Coming into the season we thought we were a good shooting team, but all of sudden we became a three-ring circus with the three-pointers,” Suter said. “And we kept saying that we got to go inside because we’ve got some pretty good kids inside, and tonight we did that.”

Burns proved he is a pretty good player inside and outside against Beloit. Burns’ 11 first-quarter points propelled the Cougars to a 24-16 lead.

The Purple Knights coun tered Burns’ hot start with six combined three-pointers from Deon Lowery and Jahlil Smith to cut the Craig advantage to 27-24 midway through the second.

Smith and Lowery, who scored 24 of Beloit’s 27 first half points, each finished with a team-high 19 points.

But Smith and Lowery didn’t have enough to stop the Cougars, who closed out the first half with a 9-0 run 36-27 halftime lead.

“We made some runs, but we kept turning the ball over and made dumb mistakes,” said Beloit coach Jay Bryant, whose team fell to 0-3 in the Big Eight Conference.

Burns continued to be a lot better than the Purple Knights in the second half. The 6-foot-6 senior brought the Cougar student section to its feet with a monstrous two-handed dunk early in the third.

The Cougars turned the momentum from the dunk into a 54-38 lead early in the fourth. The Purple Knights never drew closer than nine the rest of the way.

“Basketball is a game or runs and spurts,” Suter said. “Teams are going to make a run at you, but you have to be able to stop that and make one of your own.

“I was proud of the way our kids responded.”
