— Five more potential candidates have joined businessman Karl Dommershausen and attorney Tom McDonald in the race for Janesville City Council.

Three council seats will open up in April, and none of the incumbents—Paul Williams, Tim Wellnitz and Craig DeGarmo—are seeking re-election.

Candidates were allowed to start circulating nomination papers Saturday, City Clerk Jean Wulf said. To get their names on the ballot, candidates must collect 200 to 400 valid signatures from Janesville residents.

The five new people circulating papers are:

-- Kevin Bishop, 49, of 1602 Liberty Lane, an assembler at Fairbanks Morse Engine.

-- K. Andreah Briarmoon, 55, of 339 S. Locust St., a real estate and investments salesperson at Briarmoon Enterprises.

-- Richard Ellingson, 62, of 17 S. Atwood Ave. He lists his occupation as retired.

-- Billy R. McCoy, no age given, of 1326 Putnam Ave. He also lists his occupation as retired.

-- Yuri D. Rashkin, 32, of 226 Forest Park Blvd., owner of Service First Mortgage. He also is the husband of Janesville School Board member Amy Rashkin.

Nomination papers are due at the city clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Jan. 2.

4everbills- just to clarify, in the City of Janesville, only the 7 city council members are elected; the city council hires a City Manager; the City Manager appoints city staff.

4 ever

"The big shots" and city council? Please. It's and unpaid, thankless position. I hardly think that former police officer, a plumber, a government attorney, office manager, etc. can be considered local big shots. The winners receive about 5000 votes, not exactly a legislative mandate. They are volunteers who care about their community.

Those who wish to serve on city councils should be commended. Briarmoon, it appears, has a personal agenda, the voters will decide to elect her or not. Have some faith in the electorate. Get out and vote!

If your worring about who runs for office get out and vote. The big shots who work within the city are elected to office anyway.

Perhaps all registered voters should go to this website and decide which candidates are worthy;

If the results of the last elections Briarmoon ran in are of any indication--and I believe they are--as to what the results will be in April, it doesn't look as though you have much to worry about, jvlreader.
I just wanted to point out that Briarmoon tends to generate a lot of negativity from our more political Janesville residents. Although many of us may not agree with her, I hope everyone thinks before they speak during this election. Use your vote, not your voice, to denounce Briarmoon if that's what you desire. The verbal negativity--a lot of which is based on opinion, hearsay, or prejudice, will serve to hinder others from running out of fear of being treated simillarly.

I agree with jvlreader. Thank goodness others are also running. The last thing I want to see is Briarmoon getting on the Council by default.

Didn't Ms. Briarmoon get the hint that last few times she ran for a city counsel position? Janesville doesn't want her input!!

We, as a city, must do whatever we can to be sure that Ms. Briarmoon and her self centered ideas don't get on the council.
