— The Janesville Bluebirds had a little fun Tuesday night at the expense of the visiting Sun Prairie Cardinals.

Tom Tralmer and Zach Bayreuther scored two goals apiece, and David Jacobson stopped all 28 shots he faced, as Janesville’s co-op high school hockey team shut out the Cardinals, 7-0, in a Big Eight Conference game at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.

The fun began early for the Bluebirds (2-0, 2-0) as Ross Mauermann scored a goal just 16 seconds into the game. Aaron Jacobson controlled the puck behind the Sun Prairie net and found a streaking Mauermann in front for a 1-0 lead.

Tralmer got the first of his two goals at 5:04 of the first period for a 2-0 lead, and the rout was on.

David Jacobson, a Janesville Parker junior, was solid in the net. He had 11 saves in the first period and kept the Cardinals from scoring in the second when he stuffed Jake Dammen’s shorthanded breakaway attempt.

With Janesville getting off to fast starts in both of its wins, Jacobson said his job has been a lot easier.

“I’m usually a little nervous until we get that first goal,” Jacobson said. “The first two games we’ve gotten the first goal and just kept on going.

“We’re pretty much a speed team, so once we get into flow like tonight, I think we can be a pretty good team.”

The Bluebirds continued the onslaught in the second period. Janesville Craig senior Kenny Durfee took a perfect pass from Kaleb Eichman and blasted a shot past the Cardinals’ Taylor Ludy to make it 3-0 at 7:14.

Tralmer notched his second goal of the game a little more than a minute later on assists from Bentley Geldard and Durfee. Bayreuther made it 5-0 at 12:26 when he won the face-off in the Sun Prairie zone and whistled a shot past Ludy.

Bayreuther’s goal at 5:14 of the third period pushed the lead to 6-0 and set up a running clock for the rest of the game. Aaron Jacobson concluded the scoring at 15:40 on assists from Bayreuther and Mauermann.

After two easy wins to open the conference, the Bluebirds will step up in class Thursday when Middleton (2-0, 2-0) visits Janesville.

David Jacobson said the Bluebirds would be ready.

“We always have good competition with Middleton,” he said. “We have to play hard and stay out of the penalty box.”
