Madison East’s Augustine Avelleyra scored 14 of his game-high 21 points during the third quarter as the host Purgolders held on for a 73-66 Big Eight boys basketball victory over Beloit Memorial on Tuesday night.


East led by 10 points with 3:30 to go before the Purple Knights cut the deficit to two points in the final minute. The Purgolders then stretched things out for the final margin.


Kody Johnson and Devin Murray scored 10 points apiece to join Avelleyra in double figures for the Purgolders (1-1 Big Eight).


Max Mauel led three Knights in double figures with 15 points. K.J. Evans had 14 and Deon Lowery added 10 for Beloit (0-3, 0-2).

n Washington 64, La Follette 52—Seventh-ranked Milwaukee Washington broke away from a 34-34 halftime tie to down eighth-rated Madison La Follette (3-1) in nonconference game on the Purgolders’ court.


DeMarcus Phillips and Jon Williams each had 13 points to pace Washington, which took control in a 17-7 third quarter. Darnell Small and Javonte Walters each had 13 points for La Follette, followed by Cashton Craig with 12 and D.J. Fuller with 11.
