Craig girls rebound against Memorial
After a disappointing conference loss to Middleton and nonconfernce loss to Mukwonago, Craig coach Mark Marsden was relieved the Cougars made a strong comeback in a game rescheduled from Saturday.
“We needed a win, especially after a couple tough losses,” said Marsden, whose Cougars improved to 1-1 in the Big Eight and 1-2 overall. “It was a nice game for us.’’
The Cougars trailed 16-11 after the first quarter.
“Madison Memorial is huge inside,” Marsden said of the Spartans, who fell to 1-1 in the Big Eight. “They made some tough match-ups for us.’’
Craig went to a full-court zone press in the second quarter and turned the game around, gaining a 17-10 advantage. Kristy Benson, Whitney Storbakken and Danielle Straw each sank three-point baskets in the Cougars’ surge to a 28-26 halftime lead.
Craig posted a 14-0 run in the third quarter to seal the victory.
The Cougars strangled the Spartans with a half-court trap defense that produced turnovers.
Marsden credited Sofia Sanchez, Lauren McQueen and Storbakken for leading Craig’s defensive charge.
“It was fun to watch them,” Marsden said. “We made some steals and attacked the basket.’’
Sanchez, McQueen and Storbakken scored four points each in the third quarter as Craig took a 44-34 lead into the final period.
Memorial cut the lead to seven points with 3:30 remaining, but Craig made 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch to ensure the victory.
Strobakken scored 18 points to tie Memorial’s Taryn Olson for game honors. Benson added 16 points for Craig.
The Cougars play at Beloit Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
