JANESVILLE--Middleton High went all out to get up by 10 goals and put a quick ending to its Big Eight Conference girls soccer match against host Janesville Parker High on Thursday.

Vikings coach Steve Strieker understood the Cardinals’ motive.

“They play Madison Memorial on Saturday for the conference championship,” Strieker said. “They wanted to end this as soon as possible.”

The game ended due to the mercy rule at the 59th minute.

Middleton is 7-1 in the conference. Memorial is 6-0-2.

Parker finished 1-8 in the Big Eight.

“They are geared to go for the season,” Strieker said of the Cardinals. “They have a lot of firepower.”

Becky Harmata made 12 saves for the Vikings.

Parker begins WIAA Division 1 tournament play against Madison West at Mansfield Stadium in Madison at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Waukesha South player scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead her team to a nonconference victory.

The loss dropped Craig to 3-13-1 overall.

“We had some chances, but Marie Lesperance lit us up,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said. “If you go to sleep on a player like that, she’ll cut you like a knife, and that’s what she did.

“We controlled the second half, but we just couldn’t put (a goal) away.”

Craig opens WIAA Division 1 play at Verona next week. With Craig’s graduation scheduled for Thursday, the exact time and date of the game are still being determined.
