A ton has been written about Act 10 and the retirement or movement of teachers in the Janesville School District. If you're looking for another read about controversy or conflict you won't find it here. Today, I have two words I'd like to write about: Thank You.

As we come to the end of yet another school year, I want to publicly thank the 6th grade teachers at Marshall Middle School and the 4th grade teaching crew at Kennedy Elementary for a job well done. This year has been a year of 'firsts' in middle school and the transition seems to have gone well. A part of the positive transition was due to the kindness of those who my son looks up to -- the staff at Marshall. Jr. High wasn't exactly a bright light in my school career. While I had a handful of teachers who were 'go-to' teachers I can't say the staff was as strong as the one assembled on the east side of Janesville.

The same is true about the staff just a bit north and east of Marshall at Kennedy Elementary. The buzz word 'think outside the box' is thrown around on a daily basis. I can honestly write that some of the teaching methods were definitely 'outside the box'. This wasn't due to any curriculum or mandate, but due to the vision of a great 4th grade teacher and collaboration with UW-Madison. I look forward to yet one more year of Kennedy before the elementary life is in our rear-view mirror.

It's hard to believe the school year is almost over. The winter dragged on forever and I'm certain that not everyday was a blast at middle school or elementary for that matter. There is one thing I can believe and that is the positive bond that the teachers have with students at Marshall and Kennedy.

Enjoy your summer everyone … and thank you.
