Area pair receive National Merit Scholarships

JANESVILLE—Two area students are among about 2,500 winners of National Merit Scholarships.

The scholarships, financed by colleges and universities, were announced today by National Merit Scholarship Corp., according to a written release.

Local winners are:

--Sophia M. Lazzaroni of Badger High School in Lake Geneva. Scholarship is from the University of Minnesota. Lazzaroni listed a probable career field of biology.

--Noah D. Seichter of Parker High School in Janesville. Scholarship is from the University of Minnesota. Seichter listed a probable career field of computer engineering.

Officials of each sponsor college selected winners from finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their respective institutions, the release said.

The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship, according to the release.

Sponsor colleges and universities include 113 private and 77 public institutions located in 44 states and the District of Columbia, according to the release.

Another group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of 2014 National Merit Scholarship recipients to about 4,500, according to the release.

By the conclusion of this year's competition, about 8,000 high school seniors will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $35 million, according to the release.
