JANESVILLE—The Rock County Board Staff Committee has picked Josh Smith to be the next county administrator.

Smith currently serves as special assistant to the state auditor at the legislative audit bureau, the nonpartisan agency that reviews state agencies and programs to make sure they are operating efficiently and effectively. He also served as assistant to Rock County Administrator Craig Knutson from 2005 to 2010.

Knutson's last day is set for Aug. 1. Knutson started with the county in 1979 as assistant to the county administrator and became county administrator in 1984.

The county board staff committee made the decision during a meeting Tuesday. Salary and contract details will have to be approved by the staff committee Tuesday, June 10. The full county board has to approve the staff committee's choice at its Thursday, June 12, meeting.
