Quick Kicks: Rooftop concert series kicks off June 12

MUSIC

Dancin' on the roof

Looking for something to do on a Thursday evening in summer? Madison's Monona Terrace, 1 John Nolen Drive, will kick off its summer rooftop concert series at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, with Madison County, a top Madison country band.

Concerts run from 7-9 p.m. Admission is free and includes a great view of the state Capitol. Parking is $5.

The rest of the summer lineup is: SuperTuesday (June 19), LoveMonkeys (June 26), Shagadelics (July 10), Roots Collective (July 17) and BritBeat, a Beatles tribute band (July 24). For more details, visit communityevents.mononaterrace.com or call 608-261-4000.

Launchpad sets finals

Area garage band Audiophilia will be among 13 student bands vying for the Les Paul Award, a recording session and a Summerfest gig on Saturday, June 7, at the Launchpad band competition in Madison.

Music starts at 2 p.m. at UW-Madison's Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St. Audiophilia, which has members from Elkhorn, Lakeside Lutheran and Lake Geneva Badger high schools, is scheduled to perform at 4:05 p.m.

EVENTS

Library invites big rig

Janesville's Hedberg Public Library will kick off its summer reading program with a Big Rig Bash—complete with a real big rig—from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 31.

Games, food and crafts will be offered in the Downtown Riverfront Park between the library, 316 S. Main St., and the Janesville Performing Arts Center. Children can listen to a reading of “Big Rig” by children's author Jamie Swenson at 1 p.m. and help fill a truck with school supplies for ECHO.

Author at Raven's Wish

Local author Cinder Roherty will sign copies of her new paperbacks, “Peanut Butter and Daddy Sandwich” and “Fractured: When Your Rival is a Corpse,” from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Raven's Wish Gallery and Studio, 101 W. Milwaukee St., Janesville.

GET INVOLVED

Seniors on stage

Registrations are due Friday, May 30, for a new theatrical performance class for seniors, sponsored by the Janesville Senior Center and Janesville Performing Arts Center.

The class will be offered from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays, June 9-July 28, at the senior center, 69 S. Water St. Ron Brown, a local actor, director and playwright, will teach theatrical scene work, memorization and how to improvise scenes.

Students have the chance to perform in a revue at 7 p.m. July 31.

Try out for 'Last Five Years'

The Janesville Performing Arts Center will hold auditions for Jason Robert Brown's award-winning musical “The Last Five Years” on Friday and Saturday, June 6-7, at JPAC, 408 S. Main St.

Friday auditions are scheduled from 5-7 p.m., and Saturday auditions run from 1-3 p.m. Each participant should prepare 36 bars of an upbeat, contemporary Broadway song and bring sheet music, an acting resume and a photo.
