What's going on? Work underway on new convenience store, gas station in Janesville
What it is: Casey's General Store, a 4,325-square-foot convenience store with gas pumps under construction on the northwest corner of Center Avenue and Joliet Street.
The city in February approved the project, which is being built on a 2.12-acre site owned by the Donald J. Lukas Trust, according to city documents.
The project was not without opposition, however. Neighbors were concerned about increased motor and foot traffic, as well as the possibility that the new store and gas station would have a negative impact on operations already in the area.
William Walljasper, spokesman for Casey's, was unavailable for comment Friday.
When: A contractor on the scene said the store plans to open in September.
The store and gas pumps would be open 24 hours a day.
It will be a brick-faced, single-story convenience store with a 16-pump gas service station with an overhead canopy, according to city documents. Both the store and the pumps will be oriented toward the southeast.
The company: Based in Ankeny, Iowa, Casey's has nearly 1,800 corporate stores.
The company attributes its success to its clean stores, restrooms and friendly employees who pride themselves in customer service.
