FORT ATKINSON—Nine players contributed hits to help Janesville Craig win the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at Fort Atkinson on Saturday.

After the Blackhawks won the opener 14-4, the Cougars bounced back to take the second game 7-1.

Craig scored three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to overcome Fort Atkinson’s 1-0 advantage in the second game.

“We hit the ball hard all day long,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “In the second game, nine guys had base hits.”

A pair of two-RBI singles sparked the four-run sixth in the second-game victory.

Kevin Brandt opened the inning with a single, and Chase Nyborg doubled him to third. Nyborg’s double was the only extra-base hit the Cougars had in the game.

Justin Filter brought the runners home with a two-out single.

“That was huge,” Herbst said. “Instead of a 3-1 lead, which is a close game, we were up 5-1.”

McCauley Cox gave the Cougars a bigger cushion with a two-run single to close out the scoring.

Nick Cramer pitched a complete-game four-hitter to earn the win.

“He had a great game,” Herbst said. “They never had more than four hitters up in any inning except one when they had five. He had great command.”

Fort Atkinson had 15 hits in the opener.

“We just couldn’t stop the bleeding,” Herbst said.

The Cougars (15-8) play Middleton at Riverside Park at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Co-Big Eight leaders Janesville Parker and Sun Prairie play after the Craig-Middleton game is completed.
