High school softball: Five-run fifth sends Craig past Waunakee
JANESVILLE—Janesville Craig softball coach Dan Bayreuther enjoyed watching his team’s 5-2 nonconference victory over Waunakee on Friday to close out the regular season.
“That was the most complete game we’ve played this year,” Bayreuther said. “And what a good time to have it.”
The 12-11 Cougars begin WIAA Division 1 tournament play Tuesday with a home game against Beloit Memorial.
The Warriors (14-7) scored twice in the third to take a lead that held up until the fifth when the Cougars put up five runs.
Sarah Holford started the inning with a double. Taylor Woodman reached on an infield single, and Jennah Brandt singled to score Holford.
Candace Schleisner sacrificed runners to second and third, and Kayla Kaufman walked to load the bases with two outs.
Al Hughes then lined a bases-clearing double off the wall, and she came home when the throw got away from the catcher.
Julia Humphrey got the complete-game win. Waunakee had 10 hits, but Humphrey did not walk a batter.
“Julia did her job,” Bayreuther said. “She made them put the ball in play.”
