Elisabeth Gathy Kaveggia died on May 18, 2014, at Agrace Hospice Care in Madison, after a brief illness. She was born in Budapest, Hungary, on Feb. 10, 1926. After her medical education, she fled communist Hungary, with her husband and infant son during the revolution in 1956. After several years in Chicago, the family moved to Madison, in 1960. She worked at Central Wisconsin Center for 35 years and retired as head of Pediatric and Genetic Services in 1995. She enjoyed working with her colleagues at the Waisman Center and pioneered research into genetic diseases such as the Kaveggia-Neuhauser and Opitz-Kaveggia Syndromes. She was a conscientious physician as well as a loving and devoted mother to her four children. She was an avid knitter and tennis player and learned to play bridge in her later years with her many dear friends.

Surviving are her children: Dr. Laszlo (Susan) Kaveggia of Newport Beach, CA, Dr. Francis (Julie) Kaveggia of Janesville, WI, Andrew Kaveggia of Madison, and Lisa (Steve) King of Denver, CO; and her grandchildren: Harrison Ory, Cameron Ory, Rielly King, Sarah Kaveggia, Beth Kaveggia and Samantha Kaveggia; a nephew, George (Marcy) Gathy of Madison, and their children and grandchildren.
