Powers powers Parker past Verona
Collin Powers didn't have his best stuff Thursday.
The Janesville Parker right-hander struggled through five innings, allowing three runs and walking seven.
Powers more than made up for it with his bat. He hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to lead the Vikings to a pivotal 8-3 Big Eight Conference win over Verona.
Parker improved to 14-2 in the conference and tied for first place with Sun Prairie. The two teams meet Tuesday night at Riverside Park.
Verona (8-8 in the Big Eight) led 2-0 in the third.
Parker batted around the order in the bottom of the inning. The Vikings scored five runs, capped off by Powers' grand slam. Logan Coulter drove in Parker's first run with an RBI single, and Will Theisen followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Mitch Benway then walked to load the bases. Powers, who struck out his first at bat, then belted John Moynihan's 1-1 pitch over the fence in left.
“Obviously, that changed the whole complexion of the game,” Parker coach Brian Martin said of the grand slam. “Moynihan was throwing hard, and we didn't get very good swings on him the first couple of innings.
“Once we got the lead, our defense really played well. Zach Bailey made an incredible play at short to save a couple runs, and Darin (Brewster) did a great job in relief.”
Powers got the win despite having trouble finding the plate. The senior allowed only three hits, but the seven walks came back to haunt him.
Brewster pitched two scoreless innings. The senior right-hander allowed only one baserunner and struck out four.
Parker hosts Evansville in a nonconference game today. The Vikings host Sun Prairie on Tuesday and play crosstown rival Janesville Craig in their Big Eight finale Thursday night.
A win over Sun Prairie clinches at least a share of the conference title.
“We've put ourselves in a position where the last two conference games mean something,” Martin said. “We haven't been able to say that in awhile.”
