Ferrell three shots off lead at NCAA tournament

Edgerton native Allyssa Ferrell starts her final collegiate round today just three strokes off the NCAA Women's Golf Championships lead.

Ferrell, a senior at Michigan State University, shot a 2-over-par 72 in Thursday's third round of the national tournament being held at Tulsa Country Club.

Ferrell enters today's fourth and final round in a three-way tie for third with an even-par 210 total. Celine Boutier of Duke and Doris Chen of USC share the individual lead at 1 under.

Iowa State's Chonlada Chayunun and Stanford's Lauren Kim were tied with Ferrell at even par. 

She was 3 over (38) on her first nine holes (No. 10-18), but moved up the leaderboard by shooting a 1-under 34 on the front nine to conclude her round.

“Some days you work harder for your 72s than 75…, but today was a little bit of a struggle,” said Ferrell on the Michigan State web site. “When I first began I was 4-over, but I think once I got to 16 I said I had to make something happen at that point.

“To end up 2-over was OK. Not every day is going to be your best. I felt like I really grinded it out.”

Being only three shots behind the individual leaders gives her a shot at earning MSU's first individual national golf title.

“Only being three shots back is exciting,” she said. “It will be a new experience to play in that position, but I'm looking forward to it.”

As a team, the Spartans shot a 22-over 302 and dropped 11 spots on the team leaderboard from ninth to 20th. Through 54 holes, MSU is 50-over-par (305-283-302).

Duke took a six-stroke lead over defending champion Southern California in the team standings.

Duke matched top-ranked Southern California with a 2-under 278 to reach 16-over 856. Second-round leader Oklahoma struggled to an 11-over 291 to drop into third at 26 over. UCLA was fourth at 27 over, followed by Mississippi State at 30 over, and Arizona, Arizona State and North Carolina State at 31 over.
