DELAVAN—Dan Kilkenny, D-Delavan, is running for the 11th District state Senate seat.

Kilkenny announced Wednesday he is running against Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, to replace retiring Sen. Neal Kedzie.

Kedzie, 58, announced in early May that he is retiring at the end of this session after 12 years in the Senate.

Kilkenny, 57, has served as a Walworth County Board supervisor for eight years and on the Darien Town Board for 12.

He is from Delavan and graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from UW-Madison in 1978 and a law degree from UW-Madison in 1982.

He served on the Walworth County Technical Advisory Committee for Smart Growth, the Delavan Lake Sanitary District and the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing Task Force on Cemetery Laws. He is president of the Walworth County Cemetery Association, the release states.

Kilkenny owns his own law practice.

Kilkenny's campaign will focus on providing Wisconsin with solutions and bridging both political parties. His time on the non-partisan county and town boards will help him work with both parties, he said.

“I think that experience of thinking about problem solving rather than party politics is what's needed,” Kilkenny said.

Madison has “too toxic of a political atmosphere," he said. He hopes that with the upcoming turnover in the state Senate and Assembly the fresh faces will bring cooperation back to Madison.

Kilkenny will focus on supporting all sizes of communities because they share the values of freedom, fairness and family, according to the release.

“Dan believes that everyone should have the right and opportunity to achieve the American Dream.  He will oppose the special interests that harm hardworking families and citizens,” according to the release.

Nass, 61, was elected to represent the 33rd Assembly District in 1990.

Kedzie endorsed Nass to replace him in the Senate, a prior release states.

The 11th District includes portions of Walworth, Rock, Jefferson, Waukesha, Kenosha and Racine counties.
