Janesville Craig gave Madison West two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Regents returned the favor in the bottom half in the Cougars’ 3-2 Big Eight Conference softball victory Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars committed two errors in the top of the seventh, which allowed the visiting Regents to score their two runs and take a 2-1 lead.

West then committed three errors in the bottom of the inning to allow the Cougars to score twice and take home the victory.

“We’re still not hitting the ball,” said Craig coach Dan Bayreuther after his team improved to 9-7 in the Big Eight and 10-9 overall. “Julia Humphrey pitched a whale of a game.”

Humphrey retired the first nine batters and then allowed just one runner in each of the next three innings. Humphrey went into the seventh with a 1-0 lead, but West took a 2-1 lead thanks to the two Craig errors.

Jenna Brandt came in to get the final out of the inning and then earned the win when Craig rallied in the bottom half.

Candace Schleisner singled to open the inning and advanced to second on an outfield error. Schleisner advanced to third on a wild pitch and Kayla Kaufman walked.

Gabby Loveland then hit a fly to right, which was dropped, allowing Schleisner to score and putting Kaufman on third. Loveland stole second.

Al Hughes then hit a fly to left with two outs and the ball again was dropped, allowing Kaufman to score the winning run.

“We did just enough,” Bayreuther said.

The Cougars play a nonconference game at Fort Atkinson.
