Craig baseball rallies to beat Beloit in extras
BELOIT--Janesville Craig’s baseball team worked overtime for a Big Eight Conference win Thursday.
Alex Marro and Justin Graham had RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning to lead Craig to a 7-5 win over Beloit Memorial at Pohlman Field.
Craig (11-6, 7-6) trailed 5-4 with two outs in the seventh but got a clutch RBI single from Kevin Brandt to force extra innings.
The Cougars won despite four errors.
“Our defense let us down,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “If we make the plays, we don’t go extra innings.
“The pitchers dug in and did a great job for us. They didn’t allow an earned run and walked only two in nine innings.”
Chase Nyborg started for Craig and went the first six. The sophomore left-hander allowed five runs but all were unearned.
Connor Perkins pitched the final three innings to earn the win. The junior right-hander allowed only one hit.
Craig took a 3-0 lead in the third, but Beloit tied the game in the bottom of the inning thanks to three Cougar errors.
“Other than our defense having some problems throwing the ball around, I thought we played pretty well,” Herbst said. “We had 11 hits, and I thought that might’ve been the best we’ve swung the bats all season.”
Craig hosts Madison Memorial in a conference game at 5 p.m. today at Riverside Park.
